The weather in Chhattisgarh is set to take a turn, with rain anticipated across various regions today. The capital, Raipur, has experienced overcast conditions and intermittent drizzle. The Meteorological Department has issued warnings for heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in the central and southern parts of the state.
Several districts are under alert. An orange alert is in effect for Gariaband, Mahasamund, Raipur, Baloda Bazar, Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh, Bilaspur, Korba, Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, Bemetara, Mungeli, Surguja, Surajpur, Korea, and Balrampur, where thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are expected alongside moderate rainfall. A yellow alert has been issued for Sukma, Bijapur, South Bastar Dantewada, Bastar, Narayanpur, Kondagaon, North Bastar Kanker, Dhamtari, Balod, Rajnandgaon, Gariaband, Mahasamund, Raipur, Baloda Bazar, Janjgir-Champa, Raigarh, Bilaspur, Korba, Jashpur, Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, Durg, Bemetara, Kabirdham, Mungeli, Surguja, Surajpur, Korea, and Balrampur, indicating a likelihood of moderate rainfall.
A low-pressure area is currently active over the coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal, North Odisha, and the northwest Bay of Bengal. This is accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 kilometers in altitude, which is predicted to weaken within the next day. Two troughs are also influencing the weather; one stretches from Gangetic West Bengal to Telangana (1.5-3.1 km altitude), while the other spans from Gangetic West Bengal to the south Maharashtra coast, traversing Odisha, South Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and North Interior Karnataka (4.5-5.8 km altitude).
These systems are predicted to bring light to moderate rainfall or scattered thundershowers throughout the state today. Some areas may experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. Central Chhattisgarh is expected to be the primary region affected by the rainfall.
Weather forecasts also suggest the formation of a new low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining central Bay of Bengal on September 25. This system is projected to move westward, potentially intensifying into a depression. It is expected to arrive near the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast around September 27, potentially causing heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Bastar division and neighboring districts from September 26.
