A new directive from the Chhattisgarh government restricts the registration of agricultural land sales involving plots smaller than 5 dismil. The Inspector General (Registration) has communicated this decision to all district registrars. This action stems from the ‘Chhattisgarh Land Revenue Code (Amendment) Bill-2025’ presented in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly, which contained clauses concerning land transactions. The rule is effective immediately, with the official gazette publication completed and orders issued to all district registrars. The aim is to curb illegal plotting, a problem that arose from the earlier registration of small land parcels. The ban excludes urban areas, where land is typically not classified as agricultural. Registrations of diverted land in urban areas for commercial and residential usage will continue. Furthermore, the amendment bill gives legal status to georeferencing technology. This technology is integral to creating digital maps of the state, designed to help in resolving disputes related to land demarcation, partition and name transfer, with these maps recognized as official legal documents for court and administrative purposes.
