Bihar is set to modernize its road infrastructure with a digital initiative by the Urban Development and Housing Department. The project aims to create a comprehensive digital inventory of roads across urban areas. Municipal bodies are mandated to complete detailed mapping of roads within their jurisdictions and submit reports by August 20, 2025. A key feature is the color-coding system, which assigns specific colors to roads based on the constructing agency. National highways will be colored red, state highways green, Rural Works Department roads black, municipal roads yellow, district council roads blue-pink, Local Area Engineering Organization roads blue, and roads by other departments purple. The color-coding approach is designed to improve the ease of identifying road types and enhance the effectiveness of urban development strategies. Municipal authorities are required to provide detailed information for each road, including length, width, construction date, cost estimates, and current status. The digital database is intended to support efficient road maintenance and inform future urban planning efforts. The department has instructed chief engineers and superintendents to expedite the implementation of this project. This initiative aligns with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s recent digital outreach on August 12, 2025, concerning the ‘Chief Minister Electricity Consumer Assistance Scheme,’ which provides free electricity to a vast number of households, generating significant monthly savings. This move by the Urban Development Department marks a transformative step toward streamlining the road network in Bihar’s urban regions. The color-coded mapping and digital records promise to make road management more efficient, promote transparent planning for maintenance and new projects, and contribute to Bihar’s vision of becoming a digital and developed state.
