31 lakh general and weaker section consumers will get the same benefit from the revised Half Electricity Bill scheme of Chhattisgarh
15 lakh BPL families will continue to get free electricity facility, concrete steps towards self-reliance through solar energy
Raipur, August 4, 2025/The Chhattisgarh government has decided to give a 50 percent rebate on monthly consumption up to 100 units, while making a reasonable amendment in the limit of the monthly discount of 400 units given under the Half Electricity Bill scheme, which provides relief to domestic consumers.
Currently, there are about 45 lakh domestic consumer families in the state, out of which 31 lakh families consume less than 100 units per month. This represents about 70 percent of the consumers. Therefore, despite this amendment, these 31 lakh needy general and weaker section consumers will continue to get the benefit of the scheme as before. 15 lakh BPL (Below Poverty Line) families are also included in these 31 lakh families, who will continue to get free electricity up to 30 units as before. Along with this, they will also continue to benefit from all other benefits under the Half Electricity Bill scheme.
The state government is also rapidly implementing the Prime Minister Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, under which consumers are being given a subsidy of up to ₹1,08,000/- from the central and state governments on setting up rooftop solar plants. Under this scheme, an average of 120 units of electricity is produced per month from a 1 kilowatt capacity solar plant, on which ₹30,000 is given from the center and ₹15,000 from the state, a total of ₹45,000 is given as financial assistance. The consumer has to bear about ₹15,000 himself.
Similarly, an average of 240 units of production is possible per month for a 2 kilowatt plant, on which a total subsidy of up to ₹90,000 (₹60,000 center + ₹30,000 state) is available. The consumer has to spend only ₹30,000.
An average of 360 units of production is possible per month from a 3 kilowatt capacity plant, and in this ₹78,000 from the center + ₹30,000 from the state, i.e. a total of ₹1,08,000 is given. The consumer has to bear ₹72,000, which is also available on loan.
It is noteworthy that consumers who install plants with a capacity of 2 kilowatts or more can produce more than 200 units of electricity per month for 25 years, which is even more than the maximum discount (200 units rebate on 400 units) available from the Half Electricity scheme. Such consumers can not only get rid of electricity expenses by using electricity generated from solar energy in their homes, but can also earn income by transmitting excess electricity to the grid.
The Prime Minister Suryaghar Yojana will encourage consumers towards cheap electricity, permanent savings and energy self-reliance. At the same time, it will also prove to be a big step in the direction of fulfilling responsibility towards the environment. This will naturally lead the consumers of Chhattisgarh from the Half Electricity Bill to the Free Electricity Bill scheme. Without depending on any scheme, the consumer will become an “Urjadata” by producing energy on his own roof. This strategic initiative will take the state forward in the direction of clean energy, economic savings and energy independence.
