The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation meeting was marred by significant disruption, resulting in clashes between councillors and the involvement of marshals to escort members out. Opposition members, representing the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party, protested against the BJP Mayor. The core of the dispute revolved around accusations of the Mayor’s arbitrary conduct. Specifically, the opposition members claimed the minutes of the previous meeting were prepared in a partisan manner. The Mayor cited the actions of some councillors, who tore copies of the meeting minutes and threw them at her, as justification for their removal.
The Congress and AAP councillors further alleged the biased nature of the minutes from the prior meeting, claiming that their members were unfairly ejected by marshals. The discord persisted for about an hour. The situation intensified when Congress councillors tore copies of the minutes and hurled them towards the Mayor. Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla subsequently directed the removal of the councillors who were involved in the disruption and the tearing of the minutes. Senior Deputy Mayor Jasvir Singh Banti, Deputy Mayor Tarun Mehta, along with councillor Premlata were also ordered to leave the House for their involvement in tearing the minutes, which further aggravated the turmoil, necessitating the intervention of marshals. The Municipal Corporation’s proceedings were briefly adjourned for a period of 10 minutes.
