Strengthening its aerial defence shield, India is set to acquire a substantial quantity of missiles from Russia, potentially worth Rs 10,000 crore, to enhance its ‘Sudarshan’ S-400 air defence batteries. This move aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to expand its S-400 inventory. A deal inked in 2018 had provisioned for five squadrons of the advanced Russian air defence missile systems, three of which are now fully operational within the Indian Air Force. India is actively pursuing the acquisition of the remaining two squadrons to further consolidate its strategic air defence posture. While the initial three squadrons were delivered on time, subsequent deliveries faced logistical challenges due to evolving international circumstances. The S-400 system, christened ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ by India, represents a pinnacle of modern air defence technology. This system is designed to counter contemporary aerial threats with remarkable efficiency. Its long operational range allows it to detect and neutralize targets such as fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, and incoming ballistic missiles from extensive distances. The system’s sophisticated radar and missile capabilities provide unparalleled defence against sophisticated aerial incursions, solidifying its role as a game-changer in India’s defence strategy.
