Beena Devi, celebrated as the ‘Mushroom Lady,’ has become an emblem of empowerment in Bihar, India. Residing in Tilkari village of Munger district, Beena’s life took a remarkable turn through mushroom farming. This journey began when she struggled to provide for her family, lacking land and income sources.
Overcoming adversity, Beena initiated mushroom cultivation, a venture that not only transformed her life but also ignited a women’s empowerment movement. Currently, around 70,000 women draw inspiration from her, working towards self-sufficiency and improving their families’ lives. Her children now have access to education. Beena Devi’s impactful work has been recognized by Prime Minister Modi in ‘Mann Ki Baat.’ In 2020, she was honored by President Ram Nath Kovind. Her goal was to uplift the women in her community, and she made it her mission. More than 100 villages now see women actively engaged in mushroom farming.
Beena Devi’s early days were marked by significant hardship, with periods of food scarcity. Despite the difficulties, she persevered and acquired mushroom seeds, initially growing them in a limited space beneath her bed. After facing initial challenges, she sought training at an agricultural university, and adopted new techniques. The fruits of her labor have since turned into a thriving income.
