A sergeant in Munger, Bihar, has been apprehended by the police for engaging in illegal monetary extraction from constables under the guise of medical fitness. The sergeant is accused of extorting 2500 rupees from each of the 60 constables involved. The action was taken by the SP after receiving a formal complaint. Authorities recovered 36,000 rupees in cash from the arrested sergeant.
The incident involves the illegal collection of 2500 rupees per constable from newly appointed constables in Munger district, supposedly for their medical fitness assessment. In response, the SP promptly suspended Sergeant Sumit Kumar, who was serving at the Police Line. SP Syed Imran Masood confirmed that 36,000 rupees, representing the illegally obtained funds, was also recovered from Sergeant Sumit Kumar.
Following his arrest and the registration of an FIR at the Purabsarai police station, Sergeant Sumit Kumar was remanded to judicial custody. The SP reported receiving a complaint on June 11 about the illegal demands made to the newly inducted constables who were reporting to the district force. The Deputy Superintendent of Police was then tasked with investigating the matter and providing a comprehensive report.
The investigation affirmed that the extortion was indeed taking place under the pretense of medical fitness evaluations. Sergeant Sumit Kumar, stationed at the Police Line, was implicated in the scheme, extracting money from the newly appointed constables. According to the SP, a total of 334 new constables arrived to join the Munger district force. The sergeant targeted 60 of them, threatening to fail them medically unless they paid 2500 rupees each. The affected group included 40 female and 20 male constables.
It was discovered during the investigation that 60 constables had already paid the sergeant. Authorities seized 36,000 rupees in cash from Sergeant Sumit Kumar, which was collected from the constable candidates. The SP announced the immediate suspension of Sergeant Sumit Kumar and his subsequent arrest after an FIR was filed at the Purabsarai police station, leading to his imprisonment.
