While marriage is intended to be a lifelong commitment, some individuals treat it with disregard, frequently marrying different partners. A case in Patna, Bihar, highlights this issue. A man had eight marriages, and the truth about his past came out when he assaulted his eighth wife. Had the violence not occurred, she would have likely remained unaware of her husband’s history.
The case originates from Anisabad, near Patna. A female journalist married Rakesh Kumar, a shopkeeper, in December 2024. Post-marriage, Rakesh started to abuse his wife. She brought the matter before a local panchayat, which then revealed that Rakesh had been married seven times previously. The wife then filed a complaint at the police station. She claims that the police were dismissive of the situation and failed to take action.
The victim then turned to the Women’s Commission for assistance. Her husband did not attend the hearing, prompting a letter to the SP, requesting an investigation by the concerned police station. The victim reported that she married Rakesh Kumar from Mohania, Kaimur, on December 14, 2024, and moved into his home on December 15th.
**Violence Begins Soon After**
The woman alleged that the abuse started from the second day of her stay. She also alleged an attempt was made to burn her on January 12, 2024. A village panchayat was convened to address the issue, at which point the villagers revealed that Rakesh had been married seven times before.
**Case Filed in Mohania Police Station**
After learning about her husband’s seven marriages, the victim filed a case at the Mohania police station, but no action was taken. She subsequently sought justice through the Bihar State Women’s Commission. The victim is a journalism graduate. According to Apsara, the chairperson of the Bihar State Women’s Commission, Rakesh Kumar was summoned to the commission twice, but he did not appear. The commission scheduled a hearing for July 14, but he was absent. Another hearing was scheduled for August 4, but he didn’t attend. The Women’s Commission has now contacted the Kaimur SP, and the outcome of the case remains to be seen.
