The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) has dismantled a SIM box operation in Bihar, seizing four devices from Narayanpur village in Bhojpur district. Mukesh Kumar was apprehended during the raid conducted by a special investigation team (SIT). Authorities recovered a laptop, internet router, and multiple SIM boxes from the site. The probe has extended to identify other suspects, and it is believed that Mukesh was using his residence as a hub for the fraudulent activities, masking his operations as farming and data entry work. The investigation has revealed that the SIM boxes were used to convert international calls, originating from cybercrime hotspots, into local calls, enabling widespread fraud. Daily, thousands of fake calls were made, causing significant financial losses. The investigation is also looking into the involvement of telecom distributors and retailers who are suspected of being involved in the illegal acquisition of SIM cards using compromised biometric data.
