Unprecedented rainfall has wreaked havoc across Bihar, severely disrupting daily life. The weather forecast had predicted heavy downpours across the state, including Patna, with the potential for thunderstorms and strong winds. This has resulted in significant water accumulation, affecting both urban and rural communities.
Transportation networks have been severely affected, with disruptions to road, rail, and air travel. Schools and colleges in Patna and other districts have been closed as a safety measure. Schools in Chhapra, Siwan, Motihari, and Gopalganj are also closed today. Several areas in Patna are experiencing severe flooding, and the impact on local agriculture is substantial.
Power outages are widespread in both cities and villages. A flight from Delhi to Patna had to be diverted to Varanasi. Gopalganj district recorded the highest rainfall at 49.5 millimeters, followed by Gaya at 28 millimeters and Aurangabad at 27.6 millimeters.
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of high winds, potentially reaching speeds of 30-40 kilometers per hour across many areas. A red alert has been issued for several districts, including Vaishali, Darbhanga, and Madhubani, where over 200 millimeters of rainfall is anticipated, along with the risk of lightning strikes.
