The bypass in Bhagalpur, built with an investment of ₹200 crore, is in a state of severe disrepair. This critical link between Nathnagar and Zero Mile is heavily trafficked. However, the authorities have failed to address the road’s deteriorating condition. The government continues to collect between ₹6.5 and ₹7 lakhs in toll tax each day from this route.
The road’s condition is so poor that vehicle owners frequently face damage and breakdowns. Roughly half of the 16-kilometer bypass is severely damaged, with large potholes posing a hazard. These conditions contribute to vehicle damage and traffic congestion.
More than 25,000 vehicles utilize this route daily. Despite the high traffic volume, the government has not taken steps to improve the road. The bypass was originally constructed in 2019 by a company from Rajasthan. Toll collection was handled by companies from Bihar and Delhi from 2019 to 2021.
From August 2021 to August 2022, an MP-based company managed the tolls. Following this, companies from Nagpur and Rajasthan took over toll collection. However, no efforts were made to maintain the road. Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari stated in 2024 that toll collection should be suspended on poorly maintained roads. Yet, neither toll relief nor road repairs have been implemented.
Local residents have expressed frustration, citing frequent accidents due to the poor road conditions, with the administration failing to respond. The situation worsens during the rainy season, when potholes fill with water, making it difficult to assess their depth and increasing the risk of accidents. The public has shown discontent towards the administration’s apathy and is urging the government to address the problem to prevent future accidents.
