A comprehensive review of candidates in Bihar’s initial electoral phase has unearthed a disturbing reality: 33 individuals are currently facing murder charges. Out of 1,314 contestants for 121 seats, a substantial 27% have declared serious criminal offenses, including grave allegations against women.
The report, based on candidate affidavits, shows that 423 candidates, approximately 32% of the total, have criminal cases registered against them. Of these, 354 are accused of serious crimes. The figures are stark: 33 candidates face murder allegations, 86 for attempted murder, and 42 for crimes against women. Two candidates have also disclosed rape charges.
Political parties show varying degrees of involvement. All CPI (Maxist) candidates in this phase have serious criminal charges. Other left-wing parties also show high numbers: 80% for CPI and 64% for CPI (Marxist-Leninist). Among major parties, RJD has 60% of its candidates with serious charges, followed by BJP at 56% and Congress at 52%.
Looking at any criminal record, RJD candidates lead with 76%, trailed by BJP and Congress at 65%. Both CPI and CPI (M) have 100% of their candidates with declared criminal cases. JD(U) has 39%, AAP 27%, and BSP 20%.
The financial profile of candidates is also noteworthy. 40% are millionaires, with average assets reaching Rs 3.26 crore. Educational backgrounds are mixed, with nearly half holding graduate degrees or higher. Women remain underrepresented, comprising just 9% of the candidates.
