In a significant move to promote clean energy, the Bihar Cabinet has approved the Bihar Renewable Energy Policy–2025. The policy aims to accelerate the use of renewable energy sources, with the goal of establishing Bihar as a leading state in India’s green energy transformation. This policy replaces the previous 2017 framework and will be in effect for five years. It focuses on expanding solar, wind, biomass, green hydrogen, geothermal, pumped storage, and battery storage projects. The state aims to develop 23,968 MW of renewable energy capacity and 6.1 GWh of energy storage. The policy supports India’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2070 and meeting Renewable Purchase Obligation targets set by the Central Electricity Authority. The policy includes several investor-friendly incentives like exemptions on various charges and duties. It also provides for open access, energy banking, green tariff options, deemed industry status, and single-window clearances. Moreover, the policy relaxes norms for rooftop solar installations and includes carbon credit facilitation to attract private investments. The policy supports Renewable Energy Zones, hybrid energy parks and campus-based projects, enabling participation from registered developers, agencies and private companies. This move positions Bihar as a key player in sustainable growth and economic development.
