After enduring widespread criticism and media scrutiny, the 90-degree railway overbridge in Bhopal is set to be redesigned. The Central Expert Committee has suggested alterations to the bridge’s problematic design. The committee’s recommendation includes widening the turn radius from 6 meters to 16.7 meters. This change aims to eliminate the hazardous sharp turn, improving the safety of the overpass for heavy vehicles. The overbridge serves areas like Aishbagh, which face heavy traffic volume. The design of the bridge has created congestion and increased the risk of accidents, drawing complaints from local residents and daily commuters. The forthcoming changes are expected to significantly alleviate these issues. A revised detailed project report (DPR) will be formulated and subsequently presented to the state government and the Municipal Corporation. The railways and the construction agency will supervise the redesign efforts. Authorities anticipate that the project timeline will not be significantly impacted. The ROB project, budgeted at Rs 17.37 crore, began on May 21, 2022, with an initial completion date of August 2024. However, the project remains unfinished as of August 2025. Public outcry in June, fueled by viral images, prompted Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to take action, leading to the suspension of eight engineers and the blacklisting of the construction agency and design firm.
