In response to last week’s unrest, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, is under high alert as Friday prayers approach. The administration has taken precautionary measures to ensure safety and order, including a 48-hour suspension of internet services. This suspension is a direct response to the potential for misuse of social media, with authorities aiming to prevent the spread of false information and incitement. The Uttar Pradesh Home Department’s notice details the suspension of mobile internet, broadband, and SMS services, effective from October 2nd to October 4th. The decision was made to prevent the dissemination of rumors and the incitement of disturbances through platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp. The primary objective of this action is to uphold peace and maintain public order. Authorities also organized a flag march across the city on Thursday to demonstrate their commitment to security. These actions come in the wake of the September 26th clashes that occurred after a gathering of around 2,000 people outside a mosque following Friday prayers due to the ‘I Love Muhammad’ poster dispute.
