Jammu and Kashmir is under a severe weather alert as heavy rainfall persists across the region, including Srinagar. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslide risks for the next day. The ongoing Amarnath Yatra is progressing without disruption, allowing pilgrims to have Darshan at the holy cave despite the adverse weather. Authorities are diligently overseeing the pilgrimage routes from Pahalgam and Baltal, prioritizing the safety of the devotees. According to Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, the weather is expected to remain predominantly cloudy between July 16-17 and July 21-23, with light to moderate rain and thundershowers. He also anticipates intense downpours during these periods and isolated incidents of very heavy rainfall. Rain or thundershowers are predicted for July 18-20. The MET Centre’s advisory cautions against flash floods, landslides, and rockfalls. The public, especially those in vulnerable areas, are advised to stay safe and informed. A tragic road accident on the Srinagar-Leh highway resulted in two fatalities and several injuries near Gumri-Drass.
