The Amarnath Yatra for this year will proceed without helicopter services due to security measures following the Pahalgam incident. The Jammu and Kashmir government has established a ‘No Flying Zone’ along the Amarnath Yatra routes, effective from July 1 to August 10. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan arrived in Srinagar to assess the security preparations ahead of the Yatra’s commencement on July 3. This is the first instance since the introduction of helicopter services that pilgrims won’t have aerial access to the Holy Cave via both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. The decision, made by the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department under Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, prohibits the use of all types of aircraft, including drones, UAVs, and balloons. Exceptions will be made for medical emergencies, disaster relief, and security operations, subject to detailed Standard Operating Procedures.
A review meeting, led by Union Home Secretary Mohan, took place at the Jammu and Kashmir Police headquarters in Srinagar. The meeting included key figures such as JK Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, DGP Nalin Prabhat, and senior security officials. Discussions centered on the current security situation and the finalization of logistical support for a smooth and safe Yatra. The 52-day pilgrimage will culminate on August 9. Pilgrims can choose between the traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route.
In light of the recent security concerns, the authorities are employing a comprehensive security framework. This involves a Face Recognition System (FRS), RFID tracking, real-time weather alerts, emergency evacuation plans, and health camps to guarantee the safety and well-being of all participants.
