Security arrangements are being heightened in Manipur ahead of a potential visit by Prime Minister Modi on September 13th, according to government sources. The visit would mark the Prime Minister’s first trip to the state since the eruption of ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities. As part of the security protocol, a ban on air guns has been implemented in the Churachandpur district. Notably, there has been no official confirmation or announcement regarding the Prime Minister’s visit. District Magistrate Dharun Kumar of Churachandpur issued an order enforcing the ban on the use, carriage, and display of air guns within the district. This measure is being taken to ensure the safety and security during the Prime Minister’s visit. Violators of this order will face immediate legal consequences. The order from the government explained that the PM’s visit to Churachandpur necessitates extensive security arrangements to ensure a smooth and secure event. The presence of air guns could potentially raise public alarm and pose a security threat, hence the strict prohibition on their use and possession. The authorities have warned that any individual found in contravention of the order will be subject to legal proceedings. The Superintendent of Police in Churachandpur will oversee the enforcement of these regulations. Despite widespread anticipation, there have been no formal statements issued from either New Delhi or Imphal confirming the visit. However, various meetings have been conducted within the state to prepare for the visit. Churachandpur serves as a key area for the Kuki tribal community. The ethnic conflict between the Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023 resulted in the CM’s resignation, followed by the implementation of President’s rule. Over 250 lives were lost, and many people were displaced due to the violence. If the visit materializes, it will be PM Modi’s first trip to Manipur since the violent incidents.
