The recent Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad claimed the lives of 241 people, including passengers and crew members. Only one individual survived the tragic incident. The ill-fated flight AI-171, en route to London, departed with 230 passengers and 12 crew members at 1:17 PM before experiencing a rapid descent and crashing into the BJ Medical College and Hospital, leading to additional fatalities. The confirmed casualty count is 241, with Ramesh Vishwas Kumar being the sole survivor currently receiving treatment at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, alongside other injured individuals, including MBBS students.
Ramesh Vishwas Kumar, the lone survivor of the AI-171 plane crash, is a British citizen of Daman and Diu origin. He is admitted in Ward C7 of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where he is kept in a specially secured room to ensure his privacy and security. Ramesh suffered injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet, and recalled that the plane crashed approximately 30 seconds after takeoff due to a sudden, loud noise.
He had come to India to visit family and was on his way back to the UK with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, when the accident happened. Ramesh has been living in London for two decades with his family.
He recounted how he woke up to a scene of devastation, surrounded by bodies. He managed to escape the wreckage and was then helped into an ambulance. He is being continuously questioned by the Gujarat Police Crime Branch. The Deputy Collector of Daman and Diu visited Ramesh, and officials from the British Consulate also offered their support. Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ramesh Vishwas Kumar on Friday.
