India has officially put forth its bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, presenting the proposal to the Commonwealth Games Evaluation Committee in London. The Indian delegation was headed by Gujarat’s Sports Minister, Harsh Sanghavi, and Dr. P. T. Usha, President of CGA India. Also present were key figures from the sports and government sectors, including the Secretary of the Department of Sports, the Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, and representatives from the Gujarat government and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Officials from the Commonwealth Games Association and the Indian Commonwealth Games Association were also part of the team.
The Gujarat Sports Minister highlighted the significance of hosting the games in Ahmedabad, calling it a momentous occasion for both Gujarat and India. He emphasized the games’ role in inspiring the youth, accelerating India’s development towards 2047, and strengthening the Commonwealth movement for the next century.
The President of the Indian Commonwealth Games Association stated that India’s bid is not only about showcasing its capabilities but also its values. Ahmedabad plans to build upon the foundation laid by the 2026 Games in Glasgow to shape the future of the Commonwealth Games while honoring its history.
The 2030 Commonwealth Games are particularly significant as they mark the 100th anniversary of the Commonwealth Games movement. Ahmedabad, chosen as the host city, promises a well-structured sports venue with top-notch facilities, efficient transportation, and excellent accommodation.
The proposal is in alignment with the Games Reset principles, focusing on affordability, inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability. It underlines the integration of para-sports, the protection of human rights, the promotion of gender equality, and a long-term legacy framework that benefits athletes, communities, and the broader Commonwealth.
Ahmedabad’s proven track record of successfully hosting major events like the ICC Cricket World Cup, the Indian Premier League, and the 2022 National Games further strengthens its bid. The city is also set to host several other major sporting events in the coming years, providing it with valuable operational experience leading up to 2030.
