In a significant decision, the Supreme Court has determined that individuals in Bihar who were excluded from the draft electoral roll during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) can utilize their Aadhaar cards to challenge their exclusion. The court’s directive seeks to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process by ensuring that qualified voters are included. The court, comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, specified that objections can be made using any of the eleven documents detailed in Form 6 by the Election Commission of India (ECI) or via an Aadhaar card. This confirms the acceptance of Aadhaar as valid proof for inclusion in the voter’s list. The ruling came in response to petitions against the ECI’s June 24 order for a SIR of electoral rolls in preparation for the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. The court also permitted online submission of objections without physical documents and mandated acknowledgement receipts for physical submissions by booth-level officers.
