A legal complaint has been lodged against Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh for allegedly offending the Tulu community with his imitation of a Daiva ritual from the acclaimed film ‘Kantara Chapter 1’. The incident took place at the IFFI closing ceremony in Goa, where Singh performed a mimicry of Rishab Shetty’s depiction of Chavundi Daiva. Advocate Prashanth Metal filed the complaint, asserting that Singh’s actions were not only illegal but also deeply disrespectful to the religious sentiments of Hindus, particularly the Tulu populace. The complaint has been registered under the new Bharat Nyaya Sanhita. Reports suggest Singh also made disparaging comments about Ullalthi Daiva during his IFFI address. This controversy followed a public apology from Singh, where he expressed admiration for Rishab Shetty’s performance and reiterated his respect for diverse cultural and religious practices. Daiva worship, central to the ‘Kantara’ narrative, is a profound spiritual tradition originating from the Tulunadu region of Karnataka, embodying a connection between the earthly and divine realms through sacred ceremonies.
