A distressing cyber fraud incident has impacted Vijayeta Basu, the sister of renowned actress Bipasha Basu. She has lost a substantial sum of Rs 1.8 lakh after falling prey to a phishing scam disguised as a parcel delivery notification. The elaborate scheme led her to divulge sensitive credit card information.
The scam began with a text message on September 27, 2025, informing Vijayeta that a parcel delivery attempt had failed and requesting confirmation of details. This message included a malicious link, which Vijayeta unfortunately clicked. On the fake portal that appeared, she entered her ICICI Bank credit card details, believing it was a legitimate fee for delivery. This act of providing her financial data was the crucial step that enabled the fraudsters.
Soon after, the scam became apparent when Vijayeta received an alert from her bank. A large sum, EUR 1,730.76 (approximately Rs 1.79 lakh), had been charged to her card for a stay at the luxurious Hyatt Regency hotel in France. The fraudsters had immediately exploited her compromised card details for their own illicit gains.
Recognizing the fraud, Vijayeta took immediate steps to mitigate further damage. Her credit card was promptly blocked. She then reported the incident through the official cybercrime portal to alert authorities. A comprehensive FIR was registered at the NM Joshi Marg Police Station in Mumbai on November 2, 2025, with charges filed under the IT Act. This case serves as a stark reminder of the increasing sophistication of online scams and the importance of exercising extreme caution with unsolicited links and requests for personal data.
