Jaya Bachchan has once again spoken out against the invasive nature of paparazzi culture, labeling it ‘strange’ and unprofessional during a recent appearance at the We The Women Asia event in Mumbai. The veteran actress drew a clear line between respected journalism and what she perceives as the intrusive tactics of celebrity photographers.
Bachchan articulated her admiration for the media, stemming from her father’s career as a journalist and her own experience as a public figure shaped by media coverage. ‘My relationship with the media is fantastic. I’m the product of the media,’ she stated. However, her sentiment towards paparazzi was starkly different: ‘my relationship with the paparazzi is zero.’
She questioned the credibility and training of individuals who operate as paparazzi, especially those who she believes are emboldened by the mere possession of a mobile phone. Bachchan voiced her disapproval of their attire and their assumptions of entitlement. ‘Magar ye jo bahar drain-pipe tight gande gande pant pahen ke haath mein mobile leke… they think they have a mobile in their hand so they can take your picture?’ she articulated, highlighting her discomfort with their aggressive pursuit.
The actress also condemned the inappropriate verbal comments often made by paparazzi during photo sessions, questioning their upbringing and educational backgrounds. She expressed concern about such individuals potentially representing the public, especially given their reliance on platforms like YouTube and social media. Bachchan remained unfazed by labels of being a ‘hated celebrity,’ stating, ‘I don’t give a damn.’ She metaphorically described intrusive paparazzi as ‘chuha (rat)’ entering private spaces with cameras.
Adding to her critique, Bachchan targeted young actors she believes feed paparazzi information for publicity. She called this ’embarrassing,’ questioning the true celebrity status of those who need to ‘call a camera at the airport.’ This isn’t the first time Bachchan has publicly expressed her strong opinions on paparazzi conduct, often seen cautioning photographers at public gatherings.
Her most recent film, ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,’ directed by Karan Johar, was a commercial and critical success, even earning a National Award. The film starred prominent actors like Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt.
