Guru Randhawa, the artist behind hit songs like ‘Suit Suit’ and ‘Lahore,’ is currently embroiled in controversy over his new track, ‘Azul.’ The music video presents him as a photography teacher who seems to have an interest in a female student, who is shown in a school uniform. Critics have voiced concerns that the video inappropriately sexualizes the student and normalizes an inappropriate teacher-student dynamic.
In response to the negative reactions, Guru Randhawa posted a cryptic message on Instagram. He shared the performance metrics of ‘Azul,’ including 107,200 views within an hour and 27,000 YouTube searches. Accompanying the data was the caption: “Azul is Azuling. When God is with you, you only move forward.” The post served as an indirect response to the criticism, highlighting the song’s success despite the controversy. The singer also disabled comments on the video’s Instagram post.
The controversy surrounding ‘Azul’ stems from accusations of sexualizing schoolgirls. The video features Guru Randhawa as a photographer taking photos of students. Critics claim the video objectifies minors and encourages harassment, also noting the lyrics’ comparison of a woman’s charm to alcohol.
Furthermore, ‘Sirra’ is trending on social media, although it has also generated controversy for allegedly defaming the Jatt community. A local court has issued a summons to Guru Randhawa for September 2 after receiving a complaint about the song’s lyrics. Rajdeep Singh Mann, the complainant, has objected to a line that references opium. Mann alleges the lyrics promote drug culture, with multiple streaming platforms also involved in the complaint.
