The popular television show Anupamaa has captured the hearts of viewers, with Rupali Ganguly’s performance consistently praised. The on-screen pairing of Ganguly with Gaurav Khanna, who played Anuj Kapadia, was also a major hit. However, since Khanna’s departure, no replacement actor has been announced. Khanna is currently a contestant on Bigg Boss 19.
Producer Rajan Shahi disclosed that he received warnings against casting Khanna. Industry insiders expressed concerns, claiming Khanna was unlucky, and his previous shows had not performed well. Despite these reservations, Shahi proceeded with casting Khanna, resulting in a memorable portrayal.
In an interview, Shahi shared he was seeking an actor to embody Anuj’s complex character. Upon finding Khanna’s profile, he contacted him immediately. Shahi recalled, “Many people, including some well-known figures, told me that Gaurav’s shows hadn’t worked out, that he was unlucky. I get upset when someone says that. I’ve heard these kinds of comments about myself from the beginning, so it makes me angry.” He continued, “Every aspect of life has its own rhythm and destiny; an individual cannot be held accountable for dictating it.”
Shahi mentioned that Khanna was not required to audition for the role. He was invited for a look test and subsequently selected. Shahi added, “Anuj’s character exuded a great deal of confidence. Before Gaurav joined, Rupali had already elevated Anupama’s character, but Gaurav had a strong desire to prove himself. He hadn’t been in a serial for 6-7 years, so he gave it his all in the show.”
Khanna’s portrayal of Anuj Kapadia earned him significant audience appreciation. The love story between Anupama and Anuj elevated the show’s popularity. Khanna left the show in 2024 after three years. He has since appeared in Celebrity MasterChef and is now participating in Salman Khan’s reality show, Bigg Boss 19, where he strives to give his best.
