The director of the recently lauded courtroom drama ‘Haq,’ Suparn Verma, has divulged that the enigmatic conclusion of his film, particularly the significant rose motif, is understood in its truest sense by only three people. The movie’s final moments have captivated audiences, prompting numerous interpretations of the symbolic gesture. Verma confirmed that this critical narrative element was conceptualized early in the filmmaking process.
Speaking about the film’s genesis, Verma revealed that the specific ending scene was envisioned from the very inception of ‘Haq.’ He emphasized that the definitive meaning behind this deliberate action is a closely guarded secret, known exclusively to the key creative forces involved: Emraan Hashmi, who delivers a compelling performance as Abbas; Yami Gautam, who embodies Shazia; and Rishika, the production designer. The integration of the rose was a collaborative effort, designed to be a visual punchline. Verma instructed the production designer to create a rose garden, which not only provided the setting but also became the film’s narrative linchpin. He meticulously detailed how the rose served as a recurring symbol, starting as a gift in Emraan’s character’s initial meeting with Yami’s, preserved as a dried flower, and later carried by Emraan throughout the arduous court battles, only to be presented at the film’s close. Verma deliberately refrains from offering his personal explanation, preferring to foster an ongoing dialogue and allow each viewer to find their own truth within the narrative.
Verma also recounted the casting journey for the antagonist, Abbas Khan. He acknowledged the initial difficulty in identifying an actor capable of portraying the character’s intricate layers. Emraan Hashmi emerged as a recurring consideration, though Verma initially considered it an ambitious possibility. He attributed the successful casting to a persistent pursuit of the desired outcome. Following Verma’s directed efforts, a meeting was arranged, which proved instrumental in bringing Emraan Hashmi’s unique gravitas to the role of Abbas. ‘Haq,’ which draws inspiration from the landmark Shah Bano case and stars Yami Gautam, is receiving widespread acclaim for its compelling performances and thoughtful exploration of significant societal themes.
