As ‘Sholay’ nears its 50th anniversary, Amitabh Bachchan reminisced about the film on the ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ stage. He recounted a humorous incident involving his co-star, Dharmendra.
A contestant on the show prompted Bachchan to share a story from the ‘Sholay’ shoot. Bachchan then recalled Dharmendra’s laid-back attitude, stating that Dharmendra was unconcerned about future events and lived each moment fully. The film was shot in Ramgarh, near Bangalore, and after night shoots, while the crew and other actors would commute back to Bangalore (a journey of approximately 90 minutes), Dharmendra would often opt to sleep on the set. Bachchan also shared an incident where he and Dharmendra were traveling back to Bangalore in their separate cars. Their cars broke down on the road, and when people realized that Dharmendra was stranded, a crowd gathered. They decided to abandon their cars and took an auto-rickshaw back to Ramgarh.
The dialogues and screenplay of ‘Sholay’ were written by the duo Salim-Javed, with music composed by R.D. Burman. Released in 1975, the film broke the record of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ for highest earnings, a record that ‘Mughal-e-Azam’ had held for 15 years.
