The box office saw a major showdown on August 14, 2025, as Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s ‘War 2’ and Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ premiered. Both films were among the most anticipated releases of the year, attracting large audiences and generating significant revenue. However, both movies experienced a decline in earnings following their impressive opening weekends.
‘War 2’ started with a strong opening, earning Rs 52 crore on its first day, followed by Rs 57.85 crore on Day 2, marking an 11.25% increase. Collections then decreased to Rs 33.25 crore on Day 3 and Rs 32.65 crore on Day 4, bringing the extended weekend total to almost Rs 176 crore. The film experienced a major drop on Day 5, earning just Rs 8.75 crore (down 73.20%), but recovered slightly on Day 6 with Rs 9 crore. Early estimates suggest Day 7 collections of around Rs 5.50 crore, resulting in a first-week total of approximately Rs 199 crore across all languages. Despite the weekday decline, ‘War 2’ had a successful opening week, making it one of the biggest box office events of 2025.
The film ‘War 2’ is a sequel to the 2019 hit ‘War’, which was released on August 14, 2025. Hrithik Roshan reprises his role as Agent Kabir, and NTR Jr. joins as Agent Vikram. Anil Kapoor and Ashutosh Rana also appear in the film.
‘Coolie’ had a blockbuster opening week, opening with a massive Rs 65 crore on Day 1, with Tamil Nadu contributing Rs 44.5 crore, Hindi Rs 4.5 crore, Telugu Rs 15.5 crore, and Kannada Rs 0.5 crore. Day 2 saw a decrease of 15.77%, earning Rs 54.75 crore, followed by Rs 39.5 crore on Day 3 and Rs 35.25 crore on Day 4, taking the extended weekend total to over Rs 194 crore. The film saw a usual Monday drop with Rs 12 crore, and further slipped to Rs 9.5 crore on Day 6. Early estimates peg Day 7 at Rs 6.5 crore, bringing the first week total to a staggering Rs 222.5 crore across all languages. Despite weekday declines, ‘Coolie’ has become one of 2025’s biggest Tamil blockbusters.
The story of ‘Coolie’ revolves around Deva, a former gold smuggler who is now a coolie, who seeks to reclaim his former glory by reviving his old gang with stolen technology hidden in vintage golden watches, resulting in unintended consequences. The film features Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Reba Monica John, Junior MGR, Kanna Ravi, Monisha Blessy, and Kaali Venkat. Aamir Khan makes a cameo appearance. The film is produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures.
