While SUVs continue to lead the Indian automotive market, the Volkswagen Virtus has distinguished itself as the leading premium sedan. In 2025, the Virtus cemented its position as the best-selling premium sedan in India, a feat it also achieved in 2024, demonstrating sustained market leadership.
During the period from January to August 2025, the Virtus achieved total sales of 13,853 units, representing a growth of around 9 percent year-over-year. The premium sedan segment saw sales of 37,575 units between January and July, with the Virtus capturing a 33% market share, indicating that one out of every three buyers opted for the Virtus. The ex-showroom price for the Volkswagen Virtus starts around 11.56 lakh and goes up to 19.40 lakh, depending on the specific variant and location.
The Virtus has outpaced key competitors like the Honda City and Hyundai Verna, which, despite their popularity, have not kept pace with the Virtus’s sales in recent months. Maruti Suzuki’s Ciaz experienced a decline, with no units sold in August 2025, contrasting with 707 units sold during the same month the previous year.
The success of the Virtus can be attributed to its design, performance capabilities, and safety features. The car caters to the needs of consumers in this segment who seek a vehicle that is both practical for daily use and provides an engaging driving experience, positioning the Virtus favorably against other models.
The Virtus offers two petrol engine choices:
* A 1.0-liter TSI engine producing 113 bhp and 178 Nm of torque, available with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
* A 1.5-liter TSI engine providing 148 bhp and 250 Nm of torque, coupled with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission.
In a market increasingly dominated by SUVs, the Virtus’s achievement is significant. While the Honda City and Hyundai Verna remain relevant, the Virtus has injected new vitality into the sedan segment.
