In a move to combat pollution and modernize the vehicle fleet, the government has implemented a substantial increase in re-registration fees for vehicles 20 years and older. This policy change aims to encourage owners to replace older, less efficient vehicles with newer models. Vehicles aged 15 to 20 years are exempt from these increased fees. The focus is on pre-2005 vehicles that do not meet the BSII emission standards.
The new fee structure presents a substantial increase for owners of older vehicles. Domestic cars now face a doubling of the fee, from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. Likewise, owners of domestic bikes and scooters will experience an increase from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000. The impact is particularly significant for imported vehicles. The cost of re-registering a 20-year-old imported car has skyrocketed from ₹40,000 to ₹80,000. Imported two-wheelers will also see substantial increases, with fees ranging from ₹10,000 to ₹20,000. Furthermore, the policy extends to three-wheelers and commercial vehicles, with fees increasing from ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 and from ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 respectively.
