Mahindra & Mahindra is making significant gains in the utility vehicle (UV) segment in India, posing a considerable challenge to Maruti Suzuki’s dominance. The sales gap between the two major players has drastically shrunk, signaling a potential shift in market leadership. The sales difference, which stood at 53,500 units in the first four months of fiscal year 2025, has plummeted to 12,700 units in the current fiscal year. July alone saw the gap shrink to only 2,900 units, indicating a strong performance by Mahindra.
Should this pattern persist, Mahindra & Mahindra is on track to reclaim the top spot in the segment after a nine-year hiatus. To address the increasing demand for its popular models like the Scorpio and Thar, Mahindra is ramping up production. In contrast, Maruti Suzuki, which has held the leading position in the UV segment since 2018 with models such as Vitara Brezza and Ertiga, is facing a decline in sales.
