In an effort to resolve pending traffic challans, the Maharashtra government is planning an amnesty scheme. This initiative will allow vehicle owners to settle their outstanding traffic fines through a one-time settlement mechanism. The state is looking to tackle a backlog of traffic fines that has accumulated to over ₹2,500 crore, with Mumbai accounting for more than ₹1,000 crore of this amount.
The government is actively considering this proposal, which is anticipated to provide the state with additional revenue. According to official data, Mumbai had approximately ₹1,817 crore in outstanding e-challans, of which only ₹817 crore has been collected. The authorities are seeking new strategies to recover the remaining ₹1,000 crore. While the implementation timeline is yet to be announced, the scheme is expected to be rolled out in the coming months following the necessary approvals.
The scheme aims to provide substantial relief to owners of two-wheelers and three-wheelers, potentially requiring them to pay only 25% of the outstanding challan amount, with a 75% waiver on the remaining amount. Moreover, individuals settling their challans within 15 days could be eligible for a 50% discount, incentivizing timely payments.
Luxury vehicle owners, however, will not receive similar concessions. The government may establish various discount categories depending on the vehicle type and value, which would ensure equitable recovery and maximize revenue. Previous attempts to recover dues through Lok Adalats, offering up to a 50% discount, saw limited participation. The new one-time settlement scheme is designed to attract a broader audience and offer relief to the public.
