The Indian automotive landscape is on the cusp of a significant transformation, with a wave of hybrid SUVs and cars set to hit the market by 2026-27. Maruti Suzuki is poised to introduce cost-effective strong hybrid powertrains, starting with the Fronx compact crossover and the next-generation Baleno hatchback in 2026. Mahindra will integrate hybrid technology into its XUV 3XO model next year. The Honda Elevate hybrid will enter the mid-size SUV segment in 2026, followed by the new-generation Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in 2027. Renault’s returning Duster SUV will also offer diverse powertrain options, including hybrid, petrol, and CNG.
Mahindra’s NU_IQ platform paves the way for hybrid SUVs. The vehicle manufacturer recently launched the new NU_IQ platform, designed to accommodate multiple powertrains, including hybrid systems. This architecture will enable future Mahindra SUVs to be offered with hybrid power. The XUV 3XO, set for a 2026 release, will be Mahindra’s first hybrid model. It is expected to be powered by a 1.2-liter turbo petrol engine combined with a hybrid system.
Honda is preparing to manufacture its first hybrid SUV. Production of Honda’s inaugural hybrid SUV will commence shortly at the company’s Tapukara plant in Alwar, Rajasthan. The market launch is slated for the second half of 2026. The Honda Elevate hybrid may feature the City e:HEV’s Atkinson cycle 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder petrol hybrid powertrain.
The 2025 Maruti Fronx will feature an in-house developed strong hybrid powertrain based on a 1.2-liter Z-series petrol engine. This powertrain will also be used in the next-generation Baleno, planned for a 2026 launch.
The third-generation Renault Duster will be available with a petrol engine in early 2026. The hybrid variant is expected to be released within 6 to 12 months. The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, popular mid-size SUVs, will receive hybrid upgrades in 2027. Both SUVs are expected to incorporate a hybridized 1.5L, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine coupled with a robust hybrid setup.
