A significant policy change has been implemented by the government concerning older vehicles. The Ministry of Transport and Highways has announced amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, which will see a substantial increase in the renewal fees for vehicles that are more than 20 years old. This measure is aimed at encouraging the removal of older vehicles from the roads. For motorcycles, the renewal fee has been increased to 2,000 rupees, previously 1,000 rupees. Three-wheelers and quadricycles will now cost 5,000 rupees to renew, up from 3,500 rupees. The renewal fee for light motor vehicles has been set at 10,000 rupees, significantly higher than the previous 5,000 rupees. Imported two or three-wheelers will have a renewal fee of 20,000 rupees, double the previous 10,000 rupees. Imported four-wheelers and larger vehicles will face a renewal fee of 80,000 rupees, compared to the earlier 40,000 rupees. Other vehicle types will be charged 12,000 rupees. The new fees do not include Goods and Services Tax (GST). Vehicles older than 15 years can be re-registered, but the total age cannot exceed 20 years. The government’s primary objective is to remove old vehicles from the roads, replacing them with newer, safer, and more environmentally friendly vehicles.
