The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing significant growth. The TATA.ev India Charging Report 2025 indicates that 84% of the population is now utilizing electric vehicles. This represents a substantial increase from 74% in 2023, demonstrating a rise of over 10% in just two years. This data suggests a shift towards EVs as a primary mode of transportation.
EV owners drive an average of 1,600 kilometers monthly, approximately 40% more than owners of petrol-powered vehicles. This increased usage reflects growing trust in the technology and the charging infrastructure available to EV users.
Lower operational costs and a rapidly expanding charging network are key factors. EV owners utilize their vehicles for about 27 days a month, which is 35% more than owners of traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The reach of EVs extends across 95% of India’s road network, indicating their presence not only in urban but also in rural areas.
Addressing the charging infrastructure has been crucial for EV adoption. Since 2023, the number of public charging points has quadrupled, reaching 24,000 by mid-2025. Fast chargers are now available every 50 kilometers on 91% of the National Highways. Several states, including Karnataka, Kerala, and Punjab, have achieved 100% coverage.
Despite these advances, challenges remain. Out of the 25,000 public chargers installed by February 2024, around 12,000 were found to be non-functional. Additionally, varying apps and payment systems create complexities for users in locating and paying for charging sessions.
The report emphasizes the rising importance of fast charging, with 36% of customers viewing it as essential. In 2025, 35% of TATA.ev owners use fast chargers monthly, compared to 21% in 2023.
