Ranveer Singh’s recent performance at IFFI has ignited controversy, drawing the ire of the Tulu community. The actor was seen mimicking the depiction of a Daiva, a divine spirit revered in Tulu tradition, as portrayed in the popular film ‘Kantara Chapter 1’. This imitation, performed during his speech at the festival in Goa on November 28, has been deemed disrespectful by many.
A legal complaint has been filed against Singh by advocate Prashanth Metal, citing that the actor’s portrayal of the Ullalthi Daiva was offensive and caused distress to the Tulu-speaking community and other Hindu devotees. The complaint, registered at the High Grounds Police Station under the new Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, alleges that the act was both illegal and an insult to deeply held religious beliefs.
Adding to the controversy, Singh is also accused of making disparaging comments about the Ullalthi Daiva during his address. This situation unfolded just a day after Singh released a statement to clarify his intentions. He explained that his imitation was a tribute to actor Rishab Shetty’s powerful performance in ‘Kantara’, acknowledging the immense effort involved. Singh emphasized his profound respect for India’s diverse cultural and religious practices and offered a heartfelt apology for any offense caused.
