Heightened military activity by China along its border with Nepal is drawing significant attention, particularly from India, which views Arunachal Pradesh as its territory. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has reportedly increased its presence at the Kunmujiya outpost in Zongga County, Tibet. This strategic location offers a commanding view of adjacent valleys and key trade arteries, leading observers to believe it enhances China’s preparedness for potential conflicts along the Indian border.
Recent footage from the PLA demonstrates a sophisticated patrol system operating in Zongga County, featuring numerous observation posts at elevations exceeding 5,000 meters. These high-altitude positions on snow-covered peaks provide superior surveillance over the lower terrains and mountain passes. The PLA is utilizing a ‘three-pronged’ approach to maintain consistent vigilance despite extreme weather and difficult terrain. This integrated strategy combines ground patrols, high-mobility all-terrain vehicles for rapid deployment, and constant drone monitoring for comprehensive coverage.
The Kunmujiya outpost represents a significant investment in China’s border security network, stretching across the extensive Nepal-China frontier. Its development highlights Beijing’s focus on modernizing infrastructure in challenging, high-altitude regions. Beyond surveillance of critical entry points like Gyirong and Tatopani, the outpost also monitors trade flows and population movements, strengthening China’s regional control.
Adding to the strategic concerns are documented instances of Chinese land occupation within Nepal. A 2022 report by Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture identified 36 hectares of Nepalese land occupied by China across ten locations. China has also laid claim to substantial areas in several districts bordering Nepal. These developments signal an expanding Chinese footprint in the region, raising critical questions about Beijing’s ultimate intentions and its approach to border disputes, including the contentious issue of Arunachal Pradesh.
