India faces a critical juncture in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati, with legendary spinner Anil Kumble emphasizing the imperative to bat for survival. South Africa declared a commanding total of 489 on Day 2, built on Senuran Muthusamy’s century (109) and a swashbuckling 93 from Marco Jansen. India’s response was a slow start, reaching 9/0 by the close of play, a deficit of 480 runs.
Kumble highlighted the importance of a disciplined batting performance over the coming days, anticipating increasing challenges from the pitch. “Runs won’t be difficult, but it will still be a good wicket to bat on. For India, this is a must-win Test. They’ve endured six tough sessions already, and the focus now must be on how they can bat through the next two days,” Kumble explained.
He also pointed to opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s crucial role in the initial stages of the innings. Kumble suggested a period of consolidation is necessary. “Yashasvi will have a role to play, but not necessarily straight away. He needs 30 to 45 minutes to adjust and survive Jansen’s first spell. If he does that, we’ll see the dominant Jaiswal everyone knows,” he commented.
Earlier, Indian bowlers claimed wickets, but couldn’t prevent Muthusamy and Jansen from building a significant partnership. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja contributed with two wickets apiece. Jansen’s seven sixes were a particular highlight.
The massive total of 489 sets a challenging precedent for India. Kumble credited Jansen’s fearless counter-attacking approach for shifting the momentum decisively. “Marco Jansen completely changed the game. He trusts his batting; he’s carrying more than four bats. He handled spin brilliantly and was comfortable against the short ball,” Kumble noted.
With South Africa poised for a historic series win in India, the hosts must dig deep and mount a significant batting effort to salvage the Test match.
