India’s military prowess is set for a dramatic upgrade following the US approval of a USD 93 million package. This dual acquisition will equip the Indian Army with sophisticated anti-tank and artillery systems, dramatically increasing its precision engagement capabilities.
Key to this enhancement is the USD 45.7 million sale of the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system. This state-of-the-art “fire-and-forget” weapon includes 100 missiles and 25 launch units. Its advanced guidance system allows soldiers to engage enemy tanks from over two kilometers away and quickly retreat to safety while the missile autonomously seeks its target. The Javelin’s effectiveness has been notably demonstrated in recent global conflicts.
Alongside the Javelin, India will acquire up to 216 M982A1 Excalibur precision-guided artillery rounds worth USD 47.1 million. These rounds utilize GPS technology for unparalleled accuracy, enabling artillery units to conduct precise strikes over considerable distances, effectively turning them into precision-guided weaponry.
The Javelin’s infrared guidance system is a significant tactical advantage. Soldiers can fire the missile and immediately take cover, as the weapon locks onto its target and guides itself, often striking vulnerable top armor on tanks. This system is also adaptable for neutralizing a range of threats, including armored vehicles and fortified structures.
These acquisitions are intended to reinforce India’s strategic defenses against evolving threats and deepen the US-India partnership. The new systems will enhance India’s operational readiness and interoperability with allied forces. The infusion of these advanced weapons signifies a considerable escalation in India’s deterrent capabilities, reinforcing its strategic position.
