Ten people have lost their lives and numerous others sustained injuries following a catastrophic car explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi on Monday evening. The blast, which happened at a bustling traffic signal, ignited nearby vehicles and caused significant damage, plunging the historic Old Delhi area into chaos. The explosion was described by those present as an immensely loud detonation, followed by plumes of black smoke engulfing the scene.
This act of terror has been strongly denounced by sports personalities. Gautam Gambhir, a former World Cup-winning cricketer and current head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, conveyed his sympathies on X. ‘Praying for strength to the families of the deceased and for the speedy recovery of the injured,’ he posted.
Olympic wrestler Bajrang Punia expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives and condemned the blast. He offered solidarity with the victims’ families and urged the government to conduct an immediate, transparent, and impartial investigation into the incident. His sentiments were echoed by fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who also mourned the tragedy and extended her condolences.
The timing of the blast is particularly concerning, occurring on a day when security forces reported busting a transnational terror module and recovering a substantial amount of explosives.
