In a significant development, Zimbabwe Cricket has announced a permanent ban on Sean Williams from national team selection, citing his struggles with drug addiction. The veteran cricketer has also voluntarily admitted himself to a rehabilitation facility. This decision follows his unexpected withdrawal from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier 2025.
Williams’ absence from the Harare-based qualifier was prompted by concerns surrounding potential anti-doping tests. During subsequent inquiries, the player revealed his battle with substance abuse. Zimbabwe Cricket reiterated its stringent requirements for contracted players to maintain the highest levels of discipline and adhere to all team protocols, including anti-doping rules.
The board’s official statement pointed to a history of disciplinary problems and frequent unavailability attributed to Williams, which had previously hampered the team’s readiness and results. Despite commending his step towards recovery through rehabilitation, Zimbabwe Cricket noted that his actions raised serious questions about his commitment to professional and ethical conduct. As a result, national selection is no longer an option for Williams, and his current contract will not be extended beyond its December 31, 2025, expiry date.
Williams, a prominent figure since his international debut in 2005, leaves behind an impressive legacy. He played 24 Tests, 164 ODIs, and 85 T20Is, accumulating substantial runs and scoring 14 centuries and 56 fifties. His contributions will be notably missed.
