A new era of electric mobility has dawned in France with the launch of its first wireless EV-charging highway. Spanning 1.5 kilometers near Paris, this revolutionary road enables electric vehicles – including heavy-duty trucks and buses – to charge while in motion. The technology, developed by Electreon, utilizes a network of copper coils installed under the asphalt. These coils create a magnetic field that wirelessly transfers energy to receivers mounted on the underside of EVs. The system has been independently verified to provide a robust power output, reaching up to 300 kW, ensuring continuous energy flow without requiring a stop. This dynamic charging capability directly combats ‘range anxiety,’ a primary concern for potential EV buyers. Furthermore, it allows for the possibility of smaller, lighter, and more cost-effective electric vehicles by reducing reliance on oversized batteries. The infrastructure’s design, featuring no moving parts, promises extended longevity and minimal upkeep. This pioneering project is a significant step towards France’s national objective of establishing 9,000 km of wireless charging roads by 2035, aiming to create the world’s most comprehensive EV-charging roadway network.
