A remarkable display of athleticism and solidarity unfolded in Srinagar on Sunday with the highly anticipated Kashmir Marathon 2025. Over 1,500 runners, hailing from diverse corners of India and the globe, converged at the Polo View market to kick off what has become a landmark event for the region. The marathon, meticulously organized by the Department of Tourism, Kashmir, and the J&K Sports Council, saw representation from 27 Indian states and 11 foreign nations.
Among the notable participants was Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who not only initiated the race proceedings but also ran the half-marathon, experiencing the breathtaking route along Dal Lake firsthand. He later shared his improved performance and congratulations to all runners via his social media. The Chief Minister, accompanied by esteemed civil and police officials, energized the participants as they set off at dawn.
Adding star power to the event, Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty expressed his admiration for the marathon’s spirit and impressive participation. He described the event as a testament to unity, fitness, and peace, noting the palpable energy of people running for Kashmir and for India. Shetty, who had explored the Valley’s serene landscapes, felt a strong sense of returning charm. He expressed confidence in Kashmir’s future as a premier destination for sports and cultural gatherings, hinting at more significant events planned for February.
The Kashmir Marathon offered challenging full (42 km) and half (21 km) distances, with an attractive prize fund of Rs. 25 lakh. The route, weaving through the iconic Dal Lake and the majestic Zabarwan Range, provided an unforgettable backdrop, making it a truly picturesque race experience for every runner.
