The Indian Meteorological Department has declared a red alert for key coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh as Cyclone Montha gathers strength over the Bay of Bengal. The storm is expected to strike near Kakinada on the evening or night of Tuesday, October 28th, following a north-northwestward course. Residents in affected districts are urged to prepare for significant weather impacts.
Cyclone Montha is currently exhibiting wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, with potential gusts reaching 110 kmph. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for coastal Andhra, with isolated areas bracing for exceptionally intense precipitation. The storm’s formation is linked to significant convective activity and thunderstorms observed in the central and southern Bay of Bengal.
In response, state officials have been placed on high alert. Measures are in motion to distribute food, both dry and cooked, in areas expected to face disruption. Essential supplies, including medicines and relief items, are being stockpiled and strategically placed across vulnerable districts. The red alert specifically covers Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Nellore. Fishermen have been strongly advised against venturing into the sea for the next five days due to dangerous conditions. Coastal communities are advised to heed official warnings and adhere to safety protocols.
