The investigation into the alleged suicide of a young doctor in Satara, Maharashtra, has taken a significant turn with the arrest of a suspended police officer. Sub-Inspector Gopal Badne, accused of rape and abuse by the victim in her suicide note, surrendered to the Satara police on Sunday. His arrest follows that of Prashant Bankar, the landlord’s son, making him the second individual to be taken into custody.
The 26-year-old doctor’s death on Friday has sent shockwaves, amplified by the disturbing details of her final message, written on her palm. She accused Sub-Inspector Badne of raping her multiple times and subjecting her to severe mental and physical torment for an extended period. Her detailed four-page suicide note further implicated police officials and even a Member of Parliament (MP), alleging pressure to issue fake fitness certificates for accused individuals in police cases. Despite lodging 21 complaints previously, no action was reportedly taken.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has strongly condemned the incident and promised thorough investigation and strict legal consequences for the guilty. “This is a very serious issue. A young doctor wrote her suicide note on her hand before committing suicide. It is very unfortunate, and the government, immediately taking action, has suspended the concerned police officials, and arrests are also being made,” he remarked.
The victim’s family has voiced their anguish and demanded justice, calling for the strictest possible punishment for all involved in the doctor’s tragic end.
