Sri Lanka’s campaign in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 remains vibrant following a heart-stopping seven-run triumph over Bangladesh in Navi Mumbai. The decisive match, held at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, saw Sri Lanka successfully defend a modest total and send their opponents packing.
The final over of the match was a spectacle of nerves and skill. With Bangladesh requiring only eight runs to win, captain Chamari Athapaththu stepped up with a game-changing bowling performance. She dismantled Bangladesh’s chase by claiming three wickets in quick succession within the final over, ultimately restricting them to 195/9.
Bangladesh’s batting efforts were spearheaded by Nigar Sultana Joty, who scored an impressive 77, and Sharmin Akter, who remained not out on 64. Their partnership offered a glimmer of hope, but the team ultimately faltered when it mattered most.
Athapaththu’s spell of 4/42 was the highlight of the match, showcasing her leadership and bowling prowess. The support from Sugandika Kumari (2/29) and Udeshika Prabodhani (1/29) was also instrumental in Sri Lanka’s defense.
With this victory, Sri Lanka strengthens its position to contend for a semi-final spot, while Bangladesh exits the tournament after a challenging run, marked by their fifth defeat.
