The upcoming ODI series opener between Australia and India in Perth on October 19 will witness the international One-Day debuts of Matt Renshaw and Mitchell Owen. Renshaw, who has represented Australia in 14 Tests since his international debut almost a decade ago, will finally don the ODI colors at 29. His selection is a testament to his brilliant recent white-ball performances, including a remarkable 248 runs at an average of 82.66 in the series against Sri Lanka A. He brings a solid 50-over career record of 2794 runs at an average of 41.08.
Mitchell Owen also earns his ODI cap, earning recognition for his explosive batting display this year, highlighted by a rapid century off 48 balls against South Australia. The absence of first-choice wicketkeepers Josh Inglis and Alex Carey for the first ODI creates an opportunity for Josh Philippe to rejoin the ODI squad and take on the gloves. The squad also sees the return of all-rounder Matt Short following an injury layoff. He is slated to bat at number three throughout the three-match series against India.
This positional change for Short sees him move from his usual opening role, which he occupied in all ten of his previous ODI appearances, to accommodate the established opening partnership of Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh. Short’s return follows his recovery from a rib injury that kept him out of the series against South Africa and the Champions Trophy. He has already begun his comeback, batting at number three during the recent T20I tour of New Zealand.
Captain Mitchell Marsh conveyed his confidence in the squad’s composition, emphasizing the blend of seasoned players and new talent, and looks forward to playing in front of a full house in Perth.
