In a significant development for Diwali celebrations in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court has lifted certain firecracker bans, allowing the use of certified ‘green crackers’ for a limited period. From October 18th to 21st, residents can purchase and use these eco-friendly fireworks, a decision aimed at balancing festive traditions with urgent environmental concerns. The court specified permissible bursting times: a one-hour window in the morning (6 AM – 7 AM) and a two-hour slot in the evening (8 PM – 10 PM) on Diwali. This ruling stems from the Delhi government’s request for permission to use environmentally sound firecrackers. The Supreme Court emphasized that only products certified by NEERI and PESO are allowed, and this will be a trial measure. Strenuous monitoring by pollution control boards is mandated, along with police patrols to ensure only authorized, QR-coded products are sold. The court will re-evaluate the situation in three weeks.
